In RECAP, we address three key areas of multiple cloud computing/fog computing environments and the related heterogeneous underlying architectures and networks by provisioning deployment support for complex application components, infrastructure management support, and infrastructure (run-time) operations support.
The following use cases have been selected to be representative for a wide range of cloud actors and applications and to demonstrate the characteristic challenges that can be overcome by RECAP’s approach to the management of heterogeneous infrastructures.
Infrastructure and Network Management
As a commercial telecommunications provider and as a service application provider for various industry verticals, Tieto focuses on providing new innovative solutions leveraging on the possibilities enabled by 4G and beyond mobile technologies in conjunction with fog/cloud computing. This includes e.g. eHealth, eCommerce and traffic safety services. In all of these three scenarios, Tieto’s use case will demonstrate through the output of RECAP how the profiling and simulation of infrastructure, network function and service function characteristics can be automated to ensure the desired QoS for the different networks managed by Tieto. As part of this use case, Tieto will also provide a simulator “Network and Service Function Virtualization (NSFVSim)” which simulates how a common physical infrastructure spanning over vertical regions with different characteristics can provide end-to-end communication and content services for different categories of horizontal content services (network slices) with different QoS requirements. NSFVSim runs on a modern hyperscale hardware (such as a current Ericsson HDS 8000 installation) on Tieto’s site.
Complex Big Data Analytics Engine
A complex big data analytics engine use case from Linknovate, that helps customers in identifying emerging technologies, markets, and key players behind them. The special type of business intelligence provided to support their clients (competitive intelligence) is mainly based on a discovery engine deployed in the cloud, as opposed to a classic search engine. Advanced data processing at large scale (Big Data) is one of their core activities. By deploying ElasticSearch (scalability and performance) and Myriad open data (visualization), Linknovate deploys their virtual infrastructure in the cloud, providing their big data search engine solution. Through the RECAP output, Linknovate’s use case will demonstrate how complex applications and virtual data centres can be modelled and automatically improved in cloud environments, saving costs and improving performance.
SATEC supports specific solutions for data centre engineering, hosting, and Cloud Computing by Interhost. Their architecture includes several data centres allocated in different cities in Spain and Portugal, having full control over the networking and routing elements between them, including their own range of IP address and routing systems by the BGP routers, by agreement with the ISP providers. In addition, they have multiple applications and frameworks across different areas: healthcare, networking, e-learning, documentation and are currently expanding their market by supporting Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Everything (IoE) and smart cities. This use case will demonstrate the capabilities of RECAP for automating the reallocation of resources at the edge of the network via edge and fog computing in order to reduce the latency for their customers, and demonstrate cost savings and easy resource management for data centre operators.
Network Function Virtualisation, QoS Management and Remediation
A Network Function Virtualisation, QoS management and remediation use case from BT, which is one of the world’s leading communications services companies, serving the needs of customers in the UK and in more than 170 countries worldwide. Their main activities are the provision of fixed-line services, broadband, mobile and TV products and services as well as networked IT services. As service application providers, BT needs to provide solutions for ensuring the appropriate QoS to their virtual network functionalities. This use case demonstrates how the remediation techniques applied by RECAP can alleviate different types of failures thanks to the automation of orchestration, scheduling and rescheduling of virtualised network functions.
